taters has two definitions -

Well, "taters" is a slang word for "potatoes". Probably was first used by children learning to speak.

Of course, it's southern or kiddish for potatoes. But also, people refer to 'tater tots'. And... generally, when people refer to 'taters' specifically, it means in the mashed form. =-p
