I love explorers to death (I have 2 of them), but I need my SG
so the SG, unless you are a Metallica freak (I am)
don't get me wrong...this is a harder decision, than even comparing either to a flying V (long story)
and don't go for the Les Paul or the Firebird (well, maybe the Firebird...)
'nuff said
sincerely,
the Leech

Matter of taste. The SG weighs less, but the Explorer looks cooler. The Explorer will also sound bigger because it has more wood to help sustain the string vibrations. You have to be careful of bumping the back fin and chipping it (speaking from experience here).
I'm sure you'll be happy with either one. Make sure to try them both . . . side-by-side.

A Gibson
With that aside you need to listen to each of the guitars in the music store and pick the one that speaks to you. You are going to be motivated by the sound that your ear likes the most.
If you are going to play gigs you need to practice standing up so the shape really doesn't matter. But try them both for weight and how they feel when you play them sitting down.
