A very long time. It properly was created at a point, when people figured they must rest comfortably. Maybe they used to take sheep's wool to sleep on.

I never seen a ROUND pillow - all the ones I've ever seen are OBLONG (or maybe SQUARE) == never round ...
Cushions, now, they are round and have been round for a long time.
