The editor for the American edition didn't think the idea of the Philosopher's Stone would be as widely understood by American children so it was changed to Sorcerer. It was also thought that from a marketing point of view Philosopher possibly sounded too serious and that the title change would make it sound more "magical" and so in line with the world of Harry Potter. I think the editor got a ticking off in the end for being patronizing towards American kids.
PS. The film title is also different as is the dialogue in the film that refers to the stone.

Because the American publishers thought that American kids would be too stupid to know what a Philosopher was. Personally I hate that renaming and can't stand it when Americans insist on Amercianising everything. JK wrote the book as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - and that's the real name of the book.

They didn't think people in America would know what a philosophers stone was. Its only called sorcerer's stone in America.

The publishers thought that any book title with the word 'Philosopher' in it would scare away American readers. Seriously!

i think the american publishers
thought it would make more sense to the public
if they change the name to sorcerer.
the book is mainly about magic
and magic has to do with sorcerers

"Philosopher" conjures images of Plato and Socrates to most Americans (well, those who know what a philospher is, that is) I think publishers thought people wouldn't immediately understand that the book was about magic..maybe they thought it people would think it was about a boy named Harry sitting on a rock wrestling with all his existential issues...I don't know

They believed no one in the US would know what the philospher's stone was because supposedly that term had never been used in this country. Make's no sense to me as I can remember it being used in this country in the '80s.

I have no idea. They probably changed it for the movie, and it stuck. I don't know, though.
