The bad news is that, yes, an employer might hold short time on the job against you. Why should he spend time training you when you're probably going to leave in less than a month?

As far as checking? Some do and some don't. They can't contact your current employer without your permission, so some will wait until after you're hired to do the background check. Don't even think about faking it. Telling a lie on an employment application provides grounds to dismiss you "for cause". If you think you've got problems now, think of the mess you would be in with "fired for cause" in your background.

You didn't mention why you left three jobs in three months.

This is a cliche, but honesty is the best policy. You always assume the "worst", which is them finding out about it. Human Resources offices or employment agencies are very meticulous now at hiring the right person, what with all the lay offs, employee-employer suit filings, etc. It doesn't matter NOW that the 'stupid' thing you did happened, because it was in the past. When you apply for a job now, what's important is how you handle that history of a mess you did a long time ago. You have to move on. And you have to show that you're moving on. Being honest and taking responsibility for it is a start. That's what you call maturity. And that's on top of what employers look for in an employee.
