I think we need to take measures but shutting down free trade with China should be done with steps.
I think it's not normal that we(300 million), buy and consume more than our trade partner(1.3 billions). If China was fare as a free trade partner, they could import in a year all the agriculture stock, enough to make American farm worker over busy.
The only thing they buy from us is metals, woods because they just don't have any. They want to export to the world but refuse to import, an attitude very close to Japan of the 1980s.

Just because there have been some contamination incidents doesn't mean we should shut down all trade. In that case, we'd have to ban all trade from California, since that is where the bad spinach came from. We just need to be more careful about checking anything that comes across our borders for human or animal consumption. I don't think you'd like what happened to the price of tennis shoes if we banned everything from China.

Punitive measures like you're suggesting would serve no purpose. First, in light of the business that Chinese exporters are losing from these food scares, the Chinese government is already being forced to tighten their regulations.
Second, closing our doors to Chinese imports would raise the cost of living for everyone in the United States. Americans enjoy such a high standard of living in large part due to the access to cheap goods from China.
Third, a small portion of the US economy actually depends on trade with China. Financial institutions would lose money while such an embargo was in effect. The guys down at the dock would lose their jobs with no cargo to offload. Customs inspectors would become dead weight with no work to do. Truck drivers would have no way to earn a living with no goods to transport.

The underlying assumption in the question and comments is 'we can hurt China'
This is more incorrect that correct. For example when the US had sanctions on Sudan (darfur), sudan didnt quit the world market... 70% of its exports (mostly oil) went to China.
China is less dependant on the US than many would like to believe. In fact, in my opinion, shutting down trade with China will hurt the US more than China.
The world is not a static place with the US always on the top. Its only been that way since circa World War II.
We have been, and still are, gradually shifting back to a MULTI-polar world.

I didn't know there was bad food coming from China.
Do you really think we should end free trade? It's a very lucrative market for the West.

Bad food is coming mostly from the U.S. E.coli O157:H7 remains a largely American phenomenon... As to China, its primary exports are machinery and equipment, plastics, optical and medical equipment, iron and steel. Food is not something China exports; in fact, during an average year itislikely to import more food that export.

Ah, there are so many reasons to quit trading with China, including the latest "anti-freeze" in foodstuffs and pet foods. There is always that old standby: because they are so inhumane to their own population! Prisoners...and others...still are used to sell body parts to the weathy from Japan, Australia, Europe and America. People are still incarcerated because of their religious or political views.
They are still our enemies: they want the U.S. to be destroyed, just like the Mexicans and the Arabs.
So, at least we should not give them "favored nation trade status".
