Let a, a + 2 and a + 4 be the three numbers. So,

a + a + 2 + a + 4 = 48

3a = 48 - 6 = 42

So, a = 42/3 = 14

The smallest of the three numbers is a = 14

Easy, isn't it?

We could have done this another way too:

Since sum is 48, average will be 16. Since they are consecutive even numbers, 16 is the middle one and 14 and 18 are the others. So, 14 is the smallest number.
