What country in Europe would be the best place for an American to visit?

I've yet to venture across the pond and would like to know where you think is the best place for an American to visit first?

It seems the world is hating on Americans a little more than usual as of late. I'm looking for US friendly countries (assuming there are any!).

Ireland. They speak English, are very friendly, and like Americans. It is also a lot of fun, many English people go there to party.

Well, tell you what: when it comes to money, and money that tourists spend, every country is friendly.
As to what country to visit, I would suggest either France or Germany. While each and every country is a good place to visit, France and Germany have natural resources (caves, waterfalls, etc.) religious symbols (Ulm, Germany, has the highest steeple church in the world, taller than the Washington monument; France has so many religious sites, including Notre Dame); both have so many tourists attractions, such as the Eiffel Tower or Rottenberg (a medieval town in Germany, each building more than 500 years old). While I did not make it obvious that I was an American, people in both countries were far friendlier than any place I have been in America. (I have lived in more than 20 States).

I suggest visiting the countries of central Europe (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, etc). They have many tourist attractions. Both Prague and Budapest are fantastic.

They have two advantages compared to the rest of Europe. First they are cheaper for tourists compared to high cost countries like Germany, France, or Great Britian.

Second, Central Europeans like Americans and the US. They are still grateful that we opposed their oppressor, the Soviet Union, during the Cold War and eventually caused the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Communist economic system.

In contrast, England and France seemed to have forgotten that we saved them from German domination during the First and Second World Wars. Germany has fogotten that we generously helped them to recover economically after the Second World War and protected West Germany from domination by the Soviet Union. Instead, it is fashionable for them to blame everything bad in the world on the US, the evil superpower.

If you speak a foriegn language, go somewhere you can use your language skills. It provides a totally different experience than being an English speaking person in a Spanish speaking world, for example. Otherwise, I recommend sticking to Britain and Ireland. Probably will be a bit more US friendly, too. You should know, too, that most Europeaners will recognize that US foriegn policy is not your fault...though you might have to endure a few insults.

Albania I would say, based on the overwhelming cheering support that Bush got on his recent visit there.

Quite a surprise,as most Europeans have a negative perception of Americans, and specially of the American president.

The Vatican. Can't be beat there! Granted it's the smallest country, but the birth rate is nil. So pestering rug rats won't be a problem either. Enjoy.
