You could, but the Betta wouldn't be very happy. Many people don't recognize that Bettas are warm water fish. Putting a tropical Betta in with a coldwater Goldfish would not be good for the Betta, but it would live. Only Common Goldfish would work, Bettas will attack fish with long fins like most Fancy Goldfish. I would suggest a 10 gallon tank with a Betta, 3 Corries, and 7+ Neon Tetras, you would need a heater, filter, and some decorations, even real plants are fairly easy to keep alive. Good luck!

It really depends on certain factors, like the aggression of said betta, the size of the tank, and the way you decorate the tank. Betta males are very difficult to find suitable tankmates for. They certainly can't be housed with other males, but I'm sure you already knew that! =D Anyway, some fish that can be housed suitably with betta males are: -Platys -Neon Tetras -Ghost shrimp -Corydoras Catfish Betta females are slightly more docile, but the best thing to do with females in to keep them in a group of 6 or more to allow a heirarchy to form. Betta females can be kept with the same fish males can, the biggest difference is that they can be kept with each other. You mostly just want to stay away from fin nippers, and fish that are brightly coloured. Fish like guppies are a potential target for a betta, but bettas are a potential target for fin nippers like barbs. Hope this helped!

You can keep Betta's with other tropical fish. Gold fish are cold water fish. I house my Betta's with swordtails, platies, barbs, neon tetras, bleeding heart tetras, dwarf rainbow fish, corydoras and a dwarf kissing fish. They seem to do well together. I keep my temp in my tank between 77-80 F.
Goldfish need at least 15 gallon each because of producing so much waste. I would find something that stays small and that will get along with a Betta. Bettas are usually peaceful community fish unless they are picked on or are put with a fish that has long flowing fins.

yes but goldfish would be a bad idea. you also need a regular sized aquarium.
in a 10 gallon you could keep a betta and some small tetras like neons or glowlights.
i have a 20 gallon with a betta and gouramis.
bettas can be kind of wimps with other fish so you don't want a fish that nips -- like barbs and goldfish. the betta might decide to eventually fight back though and then you have a real mess.

You can put a male betta in a tank with most tropical peaceful fish, but NOT a goldfish. Goldfish need to be kept with goldfish and other coldwater fish only. Goldfish produce too much ammonia and grow too big for being with a betta.
EDIT: Bettas DO NOT kill other fish! Only other bettas.

Goldfish prefer temperate water temps (mid 60's) while bettas are tropical (prefer upper 70's low 80's). That makes them incompatible otherwise one or the other is not being kept at its optimal temp range.
You can however keep your male betta with other mellow tropical fish as long as you have a big enough tank (minimum 10 gallon, preferably 20+).
Some fish that will get along with a betta: most tetras (be careful with really small ones like neons, betta may kill/attempt to eat), peaceful barbs (cherry, gold not tiger), minnows, livebearers (platies, guppies, sword tails).

I say you can. However, I wouldn't do it with a goldfish. It will produce a lot more waste and will outgrow you betta. If you have a fish tank, get some tropical community fish, like tetras, swordtails, and platys.

Regardless of whether that previous guy works at an animal hospital or not, he is wrong. I have had male betas and goldfish, as well as other types of fish, in the same tanks for years. If you have a filter on your tank, the waste shouldn't be a problem either. As long as you don't put another male Beta in the tank, you should be just fine.

fish have a slime coat wich enables them to move throught the water easily. tropical fish and gold fish have different slime coats requiring different water temps and the coats antagonize one another resulting in deterioration of both slime coats. yes some may have had luck with this but is that a chance you wish to take. also each fish has different tempermaents and this another to consider is your gfish more aggressive than others? what about the betta?
