Whichever mac is closest to that price. I never had a mac until recently, but now I doubt I'll ever go back to PCs. The interface is so much cleaner and more logical.

Dell would be a ripoff parts and service wise. HP is much better in those areas. Apple is also good although a little hippy in my opinion.
A good company to consider is Carbonfrost Systems. I can speak from experience when I say they have the best warranty and service. They will literally build it to whatever you want while keeping the price low. They have computers in all price ranges so you should be able to find one.
They are launching their laptops in couple of weeks, and their computers are actually better than all of those specs for the computers you would see in Dell, HP, Acer etc and is cheaper while thier parts are all name brand parts. Just a little info for you.
They will have laptops in all price ranges with the best parts and service so you shouldn't have a problem finding one that suits you the best.
The problem with Tablet PCs is that they are still in the novelty stage and it will be sometime befoer their functionality catches up with those of of a normal laptop.

Depends how you define "best". If you want the biggest numbers (Ghz, RAM, HD, etc) then go with Windows. If you want it to be usable and reliable then go with Apple. You should also remember that processor speed is only loosely related to the time it takes to get a job done. Task time is also affected by the efficiency of the operating system, its usability, and the design of the rest of the hardware (graphics, data bus, etc.).
With your budget you could get an iBook with upgrades and some change, or a MacBookPro (if educational discount applies). If looking at Apple you should know that educational discount applies to pupils, students, teachers and lecturers.
With an Apple you will get less trouble with the operating system. See your local John Lewis, or better still, an Apple store if there's one near you. Online...

I think any Toshiba laptop of your choice would be really good. There are lots of choices so i think you should do some research on www.google.co.uk or any other search engines for the best laptop around. But try getting a Toshiba Laptop as they never let you down or Sony laptops are good too but other than those i would not buy them myself except fo Sony or Toshiba.

A MacBook Pro 15" costs £1299... that would be my dream.
CarbonFrost is a US company that only seems to sell custom desktops... not laptops.
Otherwise, Toshibas are good or the Dell XPD.
