it works both ways. when i know i'm right or when my husband doesn't understand the point i'm trying to make, i keep at it about 4 times. if i can see i'm not changing his mind and he's not changing mine i drop it.
sometimes he gets an attitude because i do drop it. but what's the point?
there have also been times when he should drop it, but he won't.

No they don't. They just can't understand that a man needs his quality time by himself every now and again. Even if they say they do understand, they still don't get it. That's my experience anyway. I'm sure there will be a more complete pscho-analysis answer but hey.
Edit: I don't know why people are offended by this. It's not REALLY a sexist question. Men and women ARE different whether you like it or not and sometimes certain women talk too much. It's just unfortunate for the offended people that, in general, this happens to be a trait more associated with females.

Yes but the real question is do men really know how to listen and respond nicely. We listen to guys about sports and cars and whatever and we are still nice. Is it too hard to ask men to do the same for us?

No. Men are moody, sensitive, and irrational. It is impossible to know when they dont want to be talked to because they are usually quite temperamental.
Don't ask weird/rude questions.
