Making slideshow is very easy. Before that you should know that, Images(photos) and audio are two different things.
Real player is for listening and watching, however for making slide show you need preinstalled Windows movie maker which I guess you already have if you got Windows installed on your computer. Or you have to have one software which could make slide show.
I think in your case pre installed windows movie maker is good. First you should gather all photos you need and the music you want to use as a background when slide show play.
Click on a Green button "START"below left side on computer (usually). Click all programs, Click on Accessories, you can see an Icon of windows movie maker or click on Entertainment then click on windows movie maker.
A window will be opened, At left side you will find menu 1,2 and 3 Under heading Import video, choose import image.
Import from the directory where images are stored as much as you want. Now drag these images down on the Time LIne one by one or put cursor on the first one then move cursor to the last image press Shift and click together it will highlight all images drag down below towards time line.
Once again look at the left menu under heading Import Video you will see Import audio or music. Do same as you did for images to import. After importing chosse which music should be with image one drag that music under image of your choice. Remember to adjust the duration some time it could be lengthy put cursor on selected audio then drag right or left to adjust with the image. If you want some audio to be longer make copy drag again or paste.
Finally run the player on your right side by clicking on Play. If you are satisfied click on top left File here you can choose save project which you can re-edit later if you want and then save by giving name, when you will about to save there are some adjustment choose as you like.
There is a lot to write but it is enough I guess.
I got one nice link given below could help you.

The way you want to present the slideshow will dictate how to create the slideshow. I put all my slideshows on a dvd and I use Pro Show Gold to create it. You can get that software at photodex.com. If you're not looking to spend money, then there are free slideshow programs out there for you. Go to www.download.com and do a search for photo montage or slideshow and a bunch of software will come up that you can download or even get on a trial basis. Most of the software will export the video into the correct format you want, either for computer viewing, dvd viewing, or even those ipod video players. And almost all the software programs allow you to incorporate music to the photos.
If you're looking to make the slideshow really pop, go to www.instantimagers.com. They offer really cool video loops and dvd art which give your slideshow or photo montage that custom look. I hope that info helps.

there are tons of ways actually not two to make a slide show. for example on most of the newer hp scanners a program called memory cd maker is part of the installation of the scanner. this sweet program converts ur pictures with music if u desire into a video data disc that can be played on any computer and most newer dvds. and can also be used in picture making machines at department stores.

If you have powerpoint you can just copy and paste your .jpeg file onto a slide. Make numerous slides and repeat this process for however many pictures you want in the show. In powerpoint just select the "slide show" function at the top, and you'll have your slideshow. To add sound you can use the "insert" function and select "movies and sounds".

properly....the straightforward soultion could be Powerpoint (MS workplace), or iPhoto (if it rather is an Apple laptop, on the grounds which you probably did not sense like telling us what form of laptop you have). Any movie modifying application can try this too (alongside with homestead windows movie maker which comes loose with homestead windows XP).
