Lung busters are great!!! Lung exercises outside of the pool can help too! It's easy to do breathing and lung capacity exercises whlie watching TV or sitting at the computer.

This website has a whole bunch of easy, out-of-the water exercises you can do to help you expand your lungs:

Also, investing in a respiratory device or "toy" as we call them will help and makes for good competition. Check out the ones below:

Good luck!

"lung busters" at the end of workouts. do as many 25 yds lengths underwater as you can. do them on a comfortable interval like 35 seconds. do as many as you can until you can't make the interval and still get all the way across underwater. do this every workout. your lung capacity will grow.

if you can't stay late to do this after workouts, or if your coach won't allow to stay later, then you need to work on this during workouts.

during long sets of say 200s try setting a breathing pattern for yourself like 1 breath every 5 strokes and stick to it. or 4 breaths per length of the pool. this forces you to hold your breath a little longer than is comfortable, especially when you begin to tire. also, the odd number of strokes will force you to alternate breath which is another good skill to practice even if your coach doesn't insist on it.

good luck

while swimming freestyle or other stroke, you can hold your breath longer while swimming. example in freestyle you can breath in every 3 stroke then increase it steadily. or you can do a 400m workout, doing 3-5-7 breathing changing every lap.

you can do running and other cardio land workouts to increase your lung capacity

try doing three pull one breathe then 4 pull one breathe then 5 pull one breathe till where your limit for freestyle.my coach used to give me these programmes.its effective as u do 500 metres of that consistantly.but beware as it may causes headache cause of the lack of O2 in your head.good luck.
