Are the ball joints the problem? I have never seen ball joints cause loose steering and ball joints usually don't wear out in six years. Have a front end shop evaluate the problem before you start throwing parts at it. There's nothing worse than spending a bunch of money on parts just to find out it didn't cure the problem. Loose steering is usually a problem in the steering box, tierods or idler arm bushings.

You'll be amazed by the improvement new ball joints will demonstrate. I hope you were able to find grease-able ones because if you have or will this will be the end of the ball joint problem. Check the idler arm and cross link while your at it.

The steering box is adjustable also if you want to tighten it up. It's probably fine but by turning the steering shaft and watching the steering arms you'll be able to see if any slop is there.

Good luck grinding off the old ball joint rivits (pain in the a*ss).

My Chevy dealer was too lazy to grease the upper joints on my S-10 4 wheel drive so I do my own.
