Long before GPS devices were available for vehicles, compasses were the thing for people who didn't want to get lost. You can still purchase an auto compass and most upscale autos come with them built in.

Any auto parts store sells compasses as cheap as $5.00. Just remember, you get what you pay for. Since GPS devices came out, the price of an upscale compass has come down. You should be able to get a good compass with altimeter and temp gauge for under $45.00.

Get a compass. I have a minivan with a compass and thermometer built into the console in the headliner.

You probably could not find the North Star. There is too much ambient light at night to see stars in the sky.

If the sun is out, when you are facing north, the sun should rise on your right and set on your left.
Oops, didn't see the part about the night. Hmmm... my daddy always knew. Something to do with the moon and stars. I wish I would've asked him while I could!

If you're driving on a freeway, 85-N means it's heading north in a general direction.
