This is everything from an instant message to a novel. Anything that comes to you in the form of a written message that you understand is "written communications." Be this viewed on paper, electronically, or some other visual medium -- as long as the context of the message is written it falls into this category.
This form of sending a message has helped us reach stunningly far back into the past and has preserved some of man kinds most vital achievements. From Egyptian hieroglyphs, to the Rosetta Stone, to the New Testament, to the Declaration of Independence, to the plaque attached to the now far flung Voyager One.
Surprisingly a good deal of important "verbal communications" starts out as written communications. Almost all presidential speeches, political speeches, newscasts (radio or television) start out as written drafts for the speaker.

Written communication is accomplished through any kind of ) of writing, whether it be by means of electronic, or manual, such as letters sent by post. Literature is also a form of written communication, although the ideas are not intended for a particular person and do not receive answering communication. When someone writes a novel, a non-fiction work, a poem, or a complaint to a company, these are all forms of written communication. If I pass you a note in class, send you a coded message, this is written communication. And let's not forget newspapers, advertisements, and even text messages on a cell phone.

You are asking a giant question, the answers to which lie within the disciplines of Communication Studies and the studies of languages, like English.
"Writing" has changed drastically in the last 100 years. From pen/pencil and paper to typewriter to computer to microphone (speaking words as "writing") to your cell phone, what it means to write continually evolves.
Along with the shifts in writing technologies come shifts in written expression: Email, chat rooms, AIM, text messaging, billboards (traditional or digital), your shoes -- writing is everywhere.
The argument has been made that we are texts as well as writing instruments. We can write to other people and change their ideas, and they can do the same to us.
Hope this helps to give you some ideas.

All of the above, and more. Written communication can also include books, reports etc. Simply put, it's anything written that communicates a message to its readers.
