The use of the lowercase "I" when an individual refers to him or herself is a direct correlation with one's lacking in self-esteem. Scratch that. It's actually a direct correlation with one's inability to hit the "Shift" key down when they hit the "I" key, or one's inability to use the spell checker.

I am sure it really doesn't mean they don't know to use a capital "I". But as a teacher, I have seen students who in their writing will use a lower case 'it' and it does disturb me a little. I always ask before I jump to conclusions. I have found that many of them are not aware and some of them look at it as a 'fad'.....like texting,

My mother told me that when someone writes a lowercase "i" instead of a big "I" then they have self esteem issues. It means they don't have a lot of confidence in themselves or else they would use a big "I".

That it's either a typo or they're trying to squash that insidious old ego. And since attention has been brought to the fact, then they're not succeeding.

they are either a poet, a nonconformist, or they are not egotistical enough to think that the self needs to be capitalized.
(or they forget to hold down the shift key)

I, myself, believe that all people should use the uppercase "I" when refering to oneself.
