The Simpsons is timeless with the best developed supporting cast in the history of TV. Family Guy is like a frat party, okay while you are there but after wards you try to wonder why fart jokes are so funny.

Family guy. It's racier, but more current. More for adults than the Simpsons.

Simpson's all the way!
They don't smack you in the head with their humor and they do it with subtlety. All Ralph Wiggum has to say is one line or give us a look and it is funny! No offensive, vulgar jokes needed to get a laugh.
You really have to pay close attention to get the many cultural references they pepper throughout the show.
