First you have to figure out if 24 has any roots...
24 = 4 x 3 x 2
V4 = 2
SO:
V24 = 2 x V(3 x 2) = 2 x V6 = 2 times the square root of 6

And now, an editorial comment about how math is taught:
Oddly, "2 x sqrt(6)" is considered "simpler" than "sqrt(24)", even though it requires an extra math operation (the multiplication). I think this is a holdover from the olden days, when you had to do square roots by hand or look them up in a table. In those days, finding sqrt(6) really was easier than finding sqrt(24).
Of course, all that is invalidated now that nobody uses square root tables or figures them out by hand any more. But mathematics curricula continue to plod along with old tradition, without ever questioning its purpose or relevance. Which is why, when math students ask "why?" nobody has an answer.

since it doesnt factor out completely, you have to find everything that goes into it. For example: 6*4=24, so 6 can be broken down to 3 and 2, thats as far as that goes. Then the 4, that can be broken down to 2 and 2. So 2*2*2*3=24, since square root deals with "couples", you have a pair of 2's with a 2 and 3 left over. so the answer is 2 root 6
