My moms is about to retire after 37yrs in social service. For some reason she is thinking NC as a place to retire. Me being the baby boy, me and my young son are tagging along. She doesn't drive - but I do. I work in admissions for a college, but I don't have a degree. I have worked in corporate america since I was 18, I am now 29. I have relocated before to memphis and louisville KY - My mom is also on the thirfty side if you know what I mean. She will sale her house in chicago and will have a nice something to retire on. But me - I am currently in the mid 40's as a salary - but I have no degree. What am I getting myself into? Low cost of living means they don't pay anything - would this be correct? What are the big companies in NC. We are also looking to purchase a house but NOT in the hood - but with a decent school and public transportation as well. Any responces will help - All I know is Charlotte is by the water. And info would be great. This is Corporatethugz - holla back

For what it's worth - I do live with my son now - not with my mother. She asked me to relocate with her - I guess this questions was for he adults - And as I started in the first question, I don't know anything about Charlotte - I checked the map and I saw water - slow ya roll - if you don't have anything positive to add - keep it moving........

Charlotte is NOT by the water. Buy yourself a map with that 40's salary. Charlotte is located in the middle of southern NC. NC is a GREAT place to retire. Just because the cost of living is low doesn't mean they don't pay well. You should grow your own wings and fly the coop I know your mom would be thankful. She doesn't want to spend her retirement raising you and your son. Not all of Charlotte is in the "hood" as you've expressed. Why don't you contact a real estate agent in Charlotte and speak to them? Do your own research.

Charlotte is not on the ocean, but there are two larger lakes in the area -- Lake Norman to the north and Lake Wylie to the south. You can be near the water at lower price points than $750K, but likely not ON the water. The cost of living is generally lower here than in many other parts of the country, but a nice house will cost something :) Best of luck and feel free to e-mail me if I can help in any way.

First off, charlotte is not by the water. We have lakes, but that it is and good luck affording a house on one of them...unless you want to spend upwards of 750,000. Low cost of living is subjective. Factor out housing and our cost of living costs just as much as everywhere else...some of it costs more. There is limited public transportation, no light rail, no subway. It is very spread out--the sprawl is out of control.

There are colleges here...Central Piedmont Community College, UNCC, etc. You can contact them regarding jobs.
