We've all seen them; Goals in which the GK never made an attempt to dive and a ball that was perfectly stoppable goes into the post.
Isn't the job of the GK to attempt to STOP all balls? Why do some GKs freeze and just watch as the ball goes in? Hell, an attempt is more commendable than just standing there.

I didn't mean to say post, I meant that it goes into the goal.

Sometimes the GK just doesn't see it coming. like on a free kick if the wall doesn't do its job and the ball gets through the wall, the keeper probably wasn't expecting that. like he said shock.

Hey man Goal keeping has to be one of the most hardest and important job in football sometimes the ball is to quick so the goalkeeper doesint notice the ball coming by sometimes there no point in diving cause the ball would be out of there reach so why waist good stamina when there are 20 minuets left in the game and if the ball is to close to the goalie thats a problem becuase the goalie will have less to to react and not to mention it can be as aqard as hell and close ups are even harder cause you dont know were the ball is headed so you have to just drop to the ground and hope to god you block the shot and the defender clears it so the offender doesint get a rebound and about the question about "Isn't the job of the GK to attempt to STOP all balls?" well ummm even the best goal keepers cant stop all goals and in some situations they dont want to make an attempt becuase it would be really really hard to stop like the stop corner in the net almost impossible to save so cut the keepers some slack okay

Pay atention and you''l see that many times goalies dive without needing to do it. Like we say in our country: they do it for the photo. Other times, they don't have time or realize that won't get to the ball. What I despise from the goalies is when they show off their defenders after a mistake from them ends in a gol. That's why the game are played with goalies, so when the defenders make a mistake or are out played by a fordward they are there to stop the ball. If that would never happen, we won't need goalkeepers.

I am a high school goalie and some goalies dont dive because they think that it is a normal shot. they step off the line 2 to 3 steps and if the ball is still in front of him, he will dive 100% of the time.

I played some keeper in a scrimmage yesterday and let one go right by me. It looked like an easy shot, it rolled to far post but for me there was no way to get to it. I have reasonable reflexes, was an all state (American) football player in high school, good at making tackles. In a way it was similar. Sometimes you can tackle a person and sometimes you are in pursuit, even though they look close to you.

a mix of shock plus slow reflex. players tend to deke goal keepers, especially from close range or on penalty kicks. keepers can't stop them all.
