smoking MJ during pregnancy is known to have the same side effects as smoking ciggarettes during pregnancy, i noticed someone put that it is one of the most dangerous drugs to use during pregnancy, that is false, i am not saying it's ok at all, but MJ doesnt have a physical withdrawl or detox.....some people answer questions and really dont know what they are typing.....nothing about her smoking pot while pregnant is ok, you might want to consider reporting her now before she has the baby, bcuz they will get her help now but if they test the baby at the time of birth and her or the baby test positive (even if she tests negative at the time of birth, the maconium is already forming in the babies intestines and they will test that) they will remove the baby from her custody right at the hospital.....i have a lot of experience in this area (addiction and pregnancy)...but i must say, thank GOD she's not doing herion (or opiates) or cocaine and alcohol...those are proven behond a shadow of a doubt to be the most harmful to the unborn fetus'....MJ is known to cause low birth weight, premature labor, respitory difficulties for the baby after birth (asthma or broncidas), but if she has been using MJ since she concieved, the likelyhood that something will be wrong with the baby are so high, some side effects from her using might not even show up until years after the birth such as ADD or ADHD. the earlier she started smoking it the more likely it is to have a major effect on the DEVELOPING FETUS. if you truley care about your friends baby, her happiness and her ability to keep custody of this baby, you should consider reporting her now and not later. i know it's hard to be put in the middle but think about the long run, how devistating would it be to see a baby come out with something wrong with it, or watch her loss custody of this child, and know the whole time you could have helped from the get go...good luck with your decision, i will pray for her baby and guidence for you both, and dont feel bad about being her friend, just bcuz she is doing what she's doing doesnt mean loves this baby any less, it just means she's an addict and needs help, addiction is a disease and the drug and it's power has a hold on her and you need to be there for her...so dont listen to the judgemental comments you get on yahoo answers, some people just act perfect and turn around and do some bad things themselves. no one is perfect in our less than perfect world.....

Marijuana can affect fetal and infant development and may cause miscarriage. Although the effects of marijuana on an unborn baby are still unknown, studies have indicated that prenatal marijuana use is linked to premature births, small birth size, difficult or long labor and an increase in newborn jitteriness.

Marijuana smoked by a pregnant woman remains in the baby's fat cells for seven to 30 days. Smoking marijuana can affect the amount of oxygen and nutrients the baby receives, which may affect growth. Marijuana is never safe during pregnancy and it can harm the baby at any stage. In addition, marijuana can have long-term effects on infants and children, such as having trouble paying attention or learning to read.

I've seen it go both ways, one baby looked to be quiet healthy and perfectly fine and the mother smoked at least twice everyday in the last month but didn't start smoking until I think the 3-4 month. I also seen a baby come out healthy but I personally thought it took alot to stimulate the baby like he was still in that slow high state months after being born. His mother smoked less than the first but never quit during the whole pregnancy so it's hard to say. I wouldn't chance it but I have seen both outcomes, I would just feel horrible if I decided to think that nothing could happen and something did which could have been prevented.

It will affect the growth and development of the baby. It can also lead to ADDHD symptoms in the child later down the line. It will take a few hours after she smokes for the drug to be absorbed by the baby from her blood stream, but it affects vital brain development, as well as possible body development. When you're growing a child inside you, your body is working overtime to provide enough nutrients to the developing fetus - this in turn means that you, as the mother, need to provide ample nutrients vital for the development. The drug tends to make things harder for the baby to develop and more often than not has lasting side affects. In essence, she's depriving her developing baby of the proper functions for proper development because the drug damages the body and brain.
Think of it this way: However the drug affects her (especially depending on how much she smokes but remember there is no safe weed!) is how much it'll affect the baby.
Why does she think they prescribe weed for cancer patients? Because it destroys and/or slows development of cells!! Just tell her that - hopefully it'll sink in! Good luck!

Tell you friend that smoking marijuana can seriously harm the developing baby!

There are a lot of studies that show weed increases the chance of miscarriage, birth defects, premature birth and problems with labor and delivery.

Smoking weed until the end of pregnancy can not only cause the problems above, but also baby will have withdrawal symptoms and possibly brain damage and learning impairments.

I hope your friend will listen to you. Tell her you are concerned not just for her but her baby, too.

No. Smoking marijuana during pregnancy may affect your baby's growth and the development of his nervous system. Studies have shown that children who were exposed to marijuana during pregnancy sometimes have problems focusing their attention and solving problems.
Children of heavy pot users may also have problems with short-term memory, concentration, and judgment. (There's no evidence so far, however, that marijuana use during pregnancy causes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
One study even found that young children whose mothers smoked marijuana during pregnancy had a higher risk of leukemia than those whose mothers did not.
What's more, there's no way to know if the pot you're smoking has been laced with other drugs (such as PCP) or contaminated with pesticides, which would put your baby at even higher risk. And using marijuana increases the chance that your baby will have birth defects if you're also drinking alcohol or smoking tobacco.
If you smoked pot before you realized you were pregnant, don't panic. The chance that your baby has been affected is very small. Still, it's important to be honest with your practitioner about your previous use of pot and other recreational drugs. She may want to run some extra tests to be sure your baby is developing normally.

i agree with the ladies who answered, i think your friend doesn't deserve to be a mother and if she continues to do she may end up with a very sick baby . it is our responsibility to take care of our children from the day of conception, women avoid medications just to keep them safe during pregnancy and lactation, there's a reason for it.
her child may have learning disabilities since marijuana may effect the development ofnervous system and the baby's growth, it may even lincrease the risk for leukemia in the future .
you don't know if there are other toxins in the marijuana like pesticides that may cause more harm to the baby.
tell your friend to act like a pregnant woman and a parent.
please be firm with her she needs it for the sake of the baby.

Does she realize when she's high, the fetus is high too?? Smoking it in the beginning and not knowing your pregnant is ok, but when you have a belly, morning sickness etc, smoking anything is harmful. It's just as bad as cigarettes. The nicotine, THC can cross the placenta and viola, everybody's loaded!!!! She needs to stop!!

Of course it can effect the baby, but something she might also want to think about is when she gives birth, they are going to take her blood and the baby's. If it comes up positive for THC, DHS will remove the baby from her custody immediately......wonder how that will effect her?

Marijuana can cause miscarriage, birth defects and will definately cause complications after birth! Don't DO IT. I know this girl who does marijuana and smoke everyday during her pregnancy and her baby had to go to go thru many surgies after birth..and there's still more to come soon too.
