Well, some women feel an urge to push and they just kind of go with their instincts. A doctor or midwife will tell you to push like you are having a bowel movement. You can strengthen those muscles by doing kegels.

Not all women feel the urge to push during labor and so they have to be coached by their doctor or midwife.

After you get past the transition stage of labor you will begin to have strong, intense contractions. These are the ones that will get your baby out. You are supposed to push while these contractions are peaking to make your pushing most effective.

All the best to you and baby!

I know this will seem like a pat answer but here goes anyway, "your body will guide you if you let it do it's job". Now for a more specific answer. The doctor or midwife will tell you to "bear down" and what they will want you to do is push like you need to pass a bowl movement. Focusing on that area helps you use the proper muscles for pushing.
This is also why the nurses will ask when you last had a bowl movement.

Like you do when you are on the toilet - or so I'm told. Anyway you shouldn't worry when the time comes you will know exactly what to do.
