No way dude.... too many miles... too much of a price.

Save up $4K more and get an M3, you'll be a lot happier.

What an acquaintance told me when I was thinking about buying a BMW - He said that he found that servicing was always expensive. With your Honda or Ford, you'll maybe take it to the dealer for regular servicing and pay, oh, about $150. With the BMW, they'll find this, that or whatever to fix and it will cost about $400 each service trip.

You know what? I bought one anyway. He was right. I don't really regret it, but that's what happen when you buy fancier vehicles. You buy the toy if you can afford the lifestyle.

BTW, ouch, a new transmission on my 2000 323i cost $5000. That's a bit steeper than a Detroitmobile.

I guess you know what you can afford - sounds high mileage, but I guess the question is, was the car abused? Getting in and driving an hour each way for a hiway commute may add miles, but is probably better for the car than stop and go driving, or some bozo who's idea of fun is spinning the tires. Unfortunately, you have no idea how it was treated unless you know the owner.

Check for the obvious - are the belts, brakes, brake lines, brake discs, all sort of new? No rust? Good shocks? Did the previous owners do regular servicing? Or will you suddenly find yourself catching up to 12 years of missed maintenance? ( A friend of mine bought a Honda CRX years ago, only to find the oil had NEVER been changed in 45,000 miles. It was like tar.)

Wow!! Toughie!!

It's great you've got a mom with "connections" at a Beemer lot!! Especially if he owns the lot.

But yeah, the mileage seems too high. At average miles, should only be about 150-160K miles.

Price seems little high, but that could be because he knows the real condition of car, since he's worked on it. He may know it's true value. The 1 yr warranty balances any long mileage, because most warranties would be only 30 days.
So if something goes wrong, you could get Mom to crab on him, too. (just kidding).

Sounds like a moderately good deal. Wish mileage were less, but if highway miles, then very little problem. The 1 yr warranty also is a big plus.

But you say he's "trying to sell you." You didn't mention whether you wanted the car, whether you liked it, or he's just applying pressure to get you to buy the car. That's most important. Do YOU like the car? If it sets your heart fluttering, then I'd say it sounds fairly good deal.

Do not, do not DO NOT buy either Mercedes or BMW. Mercedes ranked dead last in Consumer Reports car issue for reliability. And that was the new cars! There is not a single European car I would own on a bet. You can get a good used Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, or Ford Focus for $6k, and you'll be much less likely to wind up on the back of a tow truck.

I am BMW fan but if it doesn't have an extended warranty i would buy it because BMW parts have to be imported from Germany (that means big bucks) so I'd say yes with the warranty, it is a very reliable car and 525 2.5 littler 189 HP engine which isn't bad for and older car like this, so my personal opinion go for it.

A car that is well taken care of will do well even if the mileage is high. You have the 1 year warranty to fall back on too.

However, edmunds.com does report the fair market value of this car (with the mileage) to be somewhat lower; even at excellent condition.

The guy above me here is right. One year you'd be fine, btu i'm gonna tell you - the E34 cars have issues with the following: Front end (sway bars, torsion bars, tie rod ends, etc), suspension mounts, engine mounts, and various other repairs that cost alot of money. With that kind of mileage and it being only a 525 i wouldnt pay more than 4000.

I tell you what, 6 grand to be sporting a 5 series B-mer with a one year warranty is a good deal to me. The milage hoenstly would not bother me at all. Its a german automobile and if they are taken care off the can go 300k miles or more. I would test drive it and ask to have a compression test done on the cylinders, if all checks out. BUY IT!!! I would have the suspension checked out as well. Good luck with it if you choos to buy it.

don't be a putz and buy the car... your mom will never let him hear the end of it if the car sucks... 1 year warranty on the vehicle on top of everything else..., buy the ULTIMATE TANNING MACHINE..., you won't regret it...
