Before you answer. Take this into consideration: Snape DID kill Dumbledore. But remember that it was VERY important to the Headmaster to keep Snape's cover. It is possible that Snape told Dumbledore of the Unbreakable Vow that if Malfoy did not kill him, Snape would fill out the order. So (in order to save Snape's life and to keep Snape's cover) Dumbledore told Snape to kill him if they would have ever come to that conclusion. (And of course it did on the balcony.) Also remember that Snape is the most accomplished Legelimens next to Lord Voldemort himself and would have easily kept the Unbreakable vow a secret. It all comes down to whether Snape really did decide to come back and STAY back on the side of good after the fall of Voldemort 13 years prior. Mind you 13 years IS a long time and all that time spent with Dumbledore just might have given him a new light on things.

I am interested in any theories that any hardcore fans like myself may have on this controversial subject.

As mean as he is, I don't think he's evil.

If he was, I'm sure he wouldn't have taken the time to Stupefy Flitwick to distract Hermione and Luna.
I'm certain that if Snape was evil, he would have killed them instead. And he would have killed Harry.

But he didn't.

Snape's not stupid. He saw two broomsticks, and knows about the invisiblity cloak. He knew Harry was there. Dumbledore was pleading for his death; he wanted Snape to kill him so Malfoy wouldn't be stained with his blood, so Harry would be safe.

Also... there was an argument between Snape and Dumbledore that is never explained.
And Snape's hand twitched.

I suggest, if you want to know more, to check out mugglenet.com. They've got great editorials on the subject.

I really like your theory presented in your question. I was devastated when Dumbledore was killed and hope beyond hope that it was a trick.
I think that Snape is not evil. I think Snape dislikes Harry because he disliked Harry's dad, and Harry reminds Snape of James. Plus Snape is the Slythern head of house so I think he would automatically side with a Slythern kid over a Griffendor kid.
I think that if Snape was truly evil, he would have killed Harry (or tried to) or at least told the others that Harry was probably there hiding in the invisibility cloak and looked for him. After all, he knows that Voldemort would reward him highly if he captured and/or killed Harry.

Alright, I've thought long and hard about this one. I've read books about it, even, and I've come up with a conclusion for myself. You automatically assume that Snape is either Black or White. What about Gray? I think that Snape works in his own best interests, in the way of a true Slytherin.

Have you read 'The Great Snape Debate'? It's very informative.

A lot of people I have talked to think Dumbledore isn't really dead - but having a pretty good feel for JKR, I think he is. Snape has been the embodiment of evil to HP, HG, and RW since the inception of the series. I don't think that's likely to change. I think he may do something to redeem himself, and your theory about acting on Dumbledore's orders is interesting, but I have not been able to find anything to like about Snape. I think I just WANT him to be evil, so he can roast. :-)

Despite reason, Snape is most likely a neutral person: he is a nasty member of the Order of the Pheonix, but also he is somewhat loyal to Voldemort. In a very precarious position, but he may have to side with Voldemort.

Good side but he could be on his own side as well. Snape a torture soul so don't judge him. Yes he made a few mistakes we all do.

There is a theory out there called DIATSSISE or something like that. I found it a very interesting theory, and very well supported.

I think the website is:
