I'm 4 months pregnant and I keep getting these weird heart palpitations. I never got them before and it's kind of freaking me out. Should I be worried or is this normal?

I, too, remember having heart palpitations during pregnancy. Every time I climbed the stairs my heart felt like it was going to burst out of my chest. I later learned that these PVCs (Premature Ventricular Contractions) are very common in pregnancy. This irregular heartbeat is triggered by the increase of progesterone, which increases blood volume and the stroke volume of the heart. If your symptoms are accompanied by dizziness or shortness of breath, or if you have a history of cardiac problems, you should see a doctor immediately. For most women this is completely normal, yet irritating, and should disappear shortly after the baby is born.

Don't worry - heart palpitations are common in pregnancy.

My midwife explained they are due to the increased blood volume. The stroke volume of the heart increases and under the influence of progesterone, the heart can beat irregularly occasionally.

If you are having dizziness or shortness of breath of breath along with palpitations, however, then you should be seen right away b/c that would signal a true cardiac problem.

All the best to you and baby!

anything abnormal like this you should talk to your doctor about as soon as possible. sometimes it's normal, becauseyour ciculatory system is pumping a lot more blood than it's used to- and there's a lot of pressure being put on your circ system too. but it could also be a sign of a number of things that could potentially be going wrong.
so i would call the clinic today and see if they have a nurse you can talk to and then make an appointment that's soon if she says to.

Don't panic...this is a normal part of pregnancy. I have them from time to time and my doctor says they are completely normal.

At your next appointment be sure to ask about it. As long as they are frequent you should be just fine. Remember, your heart is becoming larger in order to pump the increased volume of blood in your body.

I got them during my 3rd pregnancy on occasion and it wasn't a big deal. I would definitely mention it to your doctor though.
