Well most of the answer so far are wrong. The way you are spelling ton is ambiguous and was used to mean either the so-called short ton or long ton which was used "in the old days" before metric units.
1 long ton (old usage in the UK) = 2240 pounds
1 short ton (old usage in the USA) = 2000 pounds
1 tonne however, the metric tonne = 1000 kg the whole world over.

This is one example of how standard S.I. units (the systéme international in French) leads to less ambiguity over expressions.

Did you know that the longest period of time which can be defined in S.I. units is one week? The standard S.I. unit of time is the second and therefore you can define all the following in terms of an exact and constant number of seconds:
minute
hour
day
week

However, a month or a year cannot be defined as an exact and constant number of seconds. Just thought I would throw in that bit of trivia.
