Hi, i'm 16 and thinking of gettin a moped. I do not really want one but I am about to start working at a place about 3 miles away and the hours are 5:30pm to 10:30pm, 5 days a week. I am also starting college in September. But i'm 17 in 8 months and do not know whether to just wait and get a car, but if I did this I would have no way to get home everynight at 10:30 for the time being. Its quite a big purchase and can't really aford it. I also feel that if I get a moped it will slow me down in getting a car because of funds etc. Do you think I should stop worrying about the future, live for the moment and get one or wait till i'm 17. Please Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'm thinking about getting a moped to commute to school (3 miles away too). they get great gas mileage--85-100 mpg!! so they are better for the environment!
I saw some for $770. So, if you make $7.70 an hour, that is 100 hours of work (not taking into account taxes). Is it worth it?
Maybe you will decide that you like your moped and don't need to get a car.
I like Robert's and Chad's answers.
I don't think it is very safe to ride a bike after the sun goes down.
Maybe someone at work lives near you and can give you a ride home.

Here is a point to consider. Older mopeds(puch maxi's and the like) have GREAT resale value. If you buy one, you can sell it next spring for what you paid for it (unless you mess it up). Also, check the ages in your state. You may need a special license. I have seen nice mopeds under $500. I would buy one and sell it later before you get a car. I might keep both though, I have a car and i almost bought a moped because it was far easier to park around campus.

If you don't like the idea of getting a moped, and don't want the expense (purchase price, registration, insurance, gas, etc) then DONT get one.

It's only 3 miles to work? Get a bicycle and a good rechargeable headlight for it. You'll get in shape and save up some coin for the car.

You answered your own question, never do anything you truly don't want to do,ask around find a ride and wait for the car knowing it has its expenses also with insurance. If you don't think you can handle the expense when you turn 17,then get the moped hold your head high and enjoy the ride.!

I say get the moped, its cheap and needs no insurance. Go to work, make money, let everybody know u r looking for a dependable inexpensive car. when u have the money for car, insurance and registration, buy the car, sell moped and keep moving up 1 step at a time until u make your 1st 100,000.

Have you told your parents about the moped? They may get freaked out and get you a car. That's how it worked out for me. Good Luck. 3 miles is nothing though. I'm with the bike people on that one.

Check with your local dmv because i believe you need a motorcycle license in some states to operate a moped and it also must be tagged, insured, and capable of highway speeds

Also, depending on where you live, if you only have a junior license, you cannot drive/ride after dusk.
