It will not help their cause - it will lose masses of business to competitors and hasten the demise of the Royal Mail. It is similar to the miners who destroyed their own industry whilst holding the country to ransom.

The right to strike is an important freedom that must not be lost. It did get out of hand in the 70's and 80's but then in a way there was an idealogical 'war' going on. The current Labour government were great activists and supporters of these actions. It is interesting to note that the likes of John Prescott admitted he was wrong to support such actions in some instances.
It is a fine line between protecting your own 'rights' and harming the 'rights' of others.

As for the postal strike, with the removal of the protection of a monopoly for the Royal Mail there is no choice but to catch up with the changes other companies started to make nearly 30 years ago.

These strike actions are more about trying to get better redundancy deals for more staff than for saving jobs. I suspect the Unions and the staff know the reality, many of them will find jobs with the new competitors, but not all.

Although the RM talks about 30 -40,000 jobs, look at mining in less than 5 years the RM will be emplying less than half the 193,000 workers is does now.

The government also gets a benefit in regard to public sector pensions.
On this ocassion I support the postal workers. They can't win and any deal they do achieve will be funded by the tax payer, but if we must modernise and lose jobs forever those whose livelyhood and career depended on this area should be protected.
I just wish people would realise that those who work in the private sector also deserve such protection as we move our economy into new areas for which many of the 'middle aged' workers have no skills and no prospects of being retrained to take up highly paid positions.

YES, in this case it is necessary for Postal Workers, to strike.
It is the last resort to achieve the Survival of the Royal Mail, in its present format.
The CWU has done its upmost in the last couple of years to
co-operate with Management of the Royal Mail, for stabilisation, continuity, modernisation of the business.
The process has been on-going for years. Change has
come about, & not for the better in my opinion.
The ever ending excuse from Royal Mail Management has been Cut, Cut,Cut, because of Competition scares. Increase
workload, without reward..or..perhaps with paper shares which are not tangible, & worthless.
The Top personnel never equate with the workers.
Just lull them into a false sense of security with promises,
mess about with pension funds, then award themselves with
high bonuses , by making the workforce smaller.
The answer to the question, Do you agree with the postal strike?
Then ask yourself, are you happy with the Postal System as it stands now. Less & Less Post Offices, more closures,
changed systems hearalding efficiency, but in reality
getting rid of the conscientous old type postman, replacing
with unreliable cowboys.
I have worked in the system for many years.
So did My Grandfather, & I say to you, He would turn in his
grave , if he could see The Royal Mail Policies now.

I'm not worried about the strike on Friday as I'll just treat it like any other non postal day like a Sunday or bank holiday.
workers should have the right to withhold their labour as a last resort.
i think if more people striked and the strikes were supported we might all get a better work environment

A persons labour is theirs to sell or to withhold as they see fit. So, yes I agree with anyone who wishes to strike. I don't like the whole idea of people getting heavy handed about it all though.

Yes, strikes need to be more commonplace. Ever since 1979, the worker has been undermined and their right to protest taken away. Let's restore it and with it take away the overwhelming power of the bosses.

What would they accomplish? The minute they walked out they would be replaced within minutes. Take the Illegal Mexicans already here that would work for less. If you are employed be thankful, Complaining is only asking for trouble.
