Why is it that men and women are held to a double standard concerning adultery?

That is not true at all
I think for one thing stats show that far more women commit adultery than men. It is a lot easier for them after all. But they are far more accomplished liars and their friends will cover for them and even empathise with their reasons for doing it. Even though it is wrong and if her husband were doing it then in their eyes he would be the worst in the world
I don't think men think other men that do that are some kind of male role model at all. A lot of us have found ourselves in that position rightly or wrongly and there are always reasons but in reality it is a betrayal if it is done for a whim or or anything less than the end of the marriage being imminent. If you are doing it you should get out quick.
We shouldn't have to live with mistakes our whole lives if we have a chance to start again with someone who is right for us
I think that when you are with someone you truly love, then the physical side of the partnership takes on a dimension that no other relationship you'll be in can reach. The intimacy, trust, confidence and pleasure is infinitely better and could never be matched by a fling or a casual shag, When you meet that person that takes you to that level of intimacy then for god's sake hang on to them and don't let any other come between you physically, because if you do, you will destroy that intimacy and trust forever. That's how I feel about it and I am a typical man who has been kicked around the block a few times.
I guess what I mean is I reached that level and I don't want to spoil it

This issue annoys me, men do not have a double standard. I bet if i told you i knew some one who was having an affair 90% of people would picture the person as male ! A murderer is always suspected to be a man, a rapist, a man, a peadafile, a man....men are accused of everything !

The "that's the way it has always been" answers don't work for me. I think it has to do with the fact that a man penetrates a woman. She takes something up inside her. The woman becomes the "dirty" thing. The guy sticks it in, makes a deposit, pulls it out and moves along no worse for the wear. I am not saying I think that way, just my explanation for why people see woman that have lots of male lovers as "dirty".

That double standard is perpetuated by women, not men. Men will never care who you've screwed. Women are catty, that's where this "double standard" comes from.

Standard or no standard- A hoe is a hoe, whether you're a man, woman, dog, whatever. Besides, it seems that less and less people think like that nowadays- I often hear people refer to men as whores, not manwhores anymore. So I guess we're making a little progress.

I have wondered the same question myself for a long time. Just like if a man goes out with a different lady every night, then he's considered a swinging batchelor. But if a lady does the same thing, she's considered a whore. What? Can't a lady like different partners?

In my opinion It is beacuse most men have no morals when they're young and to them women are just a game. How many girls can you get... Or the oh so normal now phrase " I can hit that" ...It's just a stupid game to them and once they have had you they don't want you anynmore and they let everyone kow they have had you and word spreads and soon you're a whore. They just don't care and society has accepted that and that is why we are not equal in this matter.

When it comes to female sexuality, lots of the double standards that exist wouldn't survive if women didn't support them, I don't think. Women seem to agree on how to judge other women who cheat or are promiscuious, and they talk about each other worse than men do.

Consider this: when was the last time you heard a man use the word "Tramp" or "Skank" seriously?

There is also a saying. All men are dogs. You ever heard one like that about women? I didnt think so. Thats why there is a double standard. Because men are automatically dogs, whereas women have to earn that title.
