My Chiropractor wants to see me 3 times a week, every week for a year. I have cancled appointments because of soreness and inflamation, and I feel that the adjustments are excessive. I've delt with chiropractors all my life and I have never heard of adjustments being done so frequently for so long. Does anybody have any info on the safety of frequent adjustments? Should I be getting that many adjustments? Links to professional articles and info on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Never, since I have seen a few people with carotid dissection after visiting a chiropractor.

Often at first and then usually about once a month after an X-Ray verifies that the subluxation has been treated.

Often people starting out will be sote. This is completely normal and will improve significantly over time. However, please let your doctor know about the discomfort. Chiropractors are dedicated to the concept of "wellness" and want you to have the best experience possible.

There's over 100 years of peer-reviewed research behind chiropractic. MD's will tell you it's invalid science but the AMA has been trying to eliminate Chiropractic from the very beginning.

When the AMA was formed in 1847, they candidly told Congress that their intent was to eliminate competition in the healing art industry and raise the compensation of the remaining doctors. If the chiropractors had agreed to be licensed by the AMA instead of having their own licensing group formed, the AMA would probably be fine with them.

I think its time for you to find a new chiropractor; or confront him on why he suggests so many visits. Usually the doctor will prescribe a treatment plan for a certain number of visits over so many weeks. After that time period ends, he will see how you progress, and then decide if you need to keep coming that often but usually start spreading out the adjustments more until your condition is better and you are coming every few months or twice a year for maintenence. If no improvement is being seen after several weeks of multiple adjustments then an MRI is usually recommended to get a better look at what's going on. I never heard of such a crazy treatment plan...can your chiropractor predict he future?...he has no idea of how you will progress in a year. For your inflammation definitely apply ice to the area to reduce it...and then heat following. Alternate 5 min ice/ 10 min heat about twice/day as needed.
...but I would definitely look into finding another chiropractor

As a Chiropractor with 20 years experience myself I see a patient 3-5 times over 2-3 weeks but may request as many as 12 visits over 3-4 months if the condition is severe. The number of treatments depend on the response to care. Anyone who recommends this many treatments should be avoided and cause this noble profession to have a bad name. IMHO. Patients who do not respond to care should be referred to another health care provider and have special studies as necessary.

I am no longer on the Doctor's referral list listed on this site but still practice this way. All the best

I Jae. I am a Chiropractor and this sounds excessive to me. Frankly, no doctor can precisely predict a patient's response to treatment. Therefore, it is hard to understand how a doctor could know a year in advance, that you will not respond to treatment in less time.

It is more reasonable to prescribe blocks of treatment lasting 3 to 6 weeks with re-evaluation at that time. Based on the patients actual response, then the doctor and patient can continue with care, reduce the frequency of care, modify the care, or even discontinue care if the patient is well, or if the patient is not responding.

Hope this line of reasoning is helpful for you.

Best wishes and good luck.

I think that is too often, especially since you're getting inflamation. With My chiropractor he says once a week, and eventually once every other week. But three times a week is excessive, unless you have a condition where you can barely even walk properly.
