I wouldn't have a clue as to what fish is best to keep LOL... See what fish you like, learn about them and keep them, those are best for you.

Over the years I don't know how many species I have kept, probably well over 1000. I have bred 457 so far though, that number I do know.

A partial list of what I am currently keeping: some bettas(about 50), a few species of killifish, 2 varieties of guppies, a rather rare livebearer (Skiffia francesae), chololate gourami, a pool of 5 freshwater stingrays, a 2 spot pike cichlid and a few community tanks around the house, including a planted tank of community fish and an african cichlid community tank. I hope to convert the large planted tank back to Discus in the near future, if I can ever catch all the rainbow fish out of it lol.

I want to encourage others to also answer this question!

Thanks MM,

I haven't kept a discus at all to say good or bad. The only thing I really know about them is that they are reported as very prized and expensive, but outside of that, i can't say anything from experience, I could only tell you whatever someone else has said, and I don't always find that useful.

Malawi cichilds, I've got a couple of them. In a small tank, they are very aggressive fish, and they will fight, it's just a matter of time if it's a bigger tank. You can reduce thier aggression, as I've learned tons from 8 in the Corner about thier behavior and care needs. Rocks and caves really help, and they tend to thrive better in a higher ph then lower. They tend to like more of the live foods, but that doesn't mean other fish all inclusive. Bloodworms, mealworms, krill, and brine shrimp fall into that catagory, and I've seen them really move around much more when feeding that vs. just flakes.

Malawis as I said are for the most part very dominant aggressive fish. They are very colorful as well, and given I haven't cared for discus's and have a couple Malawi's I'd vote for the Malawi's. I think you could spend hours just watching them to see what they do and try to figure out why they do what they do. Lots to learn with Malawi's

I'm like MM - I don't have a list of all the fish I've kept over the years, but it's probably well over 500 species, and I've kept freshwater, brackish, and saltwater species.

I wouldn't even try to suggest a single "best" fish. Everyone will have a different idea of "best" by the experience level, ease of care, size/space available, and personal preferences of the owner involved. I like bettas a lot, and have bred these in the past, I also like saltwater fish (my tastes here run toward small-medium fish that do well in a more "community" set up, like Bangaii cardinals and longnose hawkfish). For a long time I liked keeping native fish and liked the darters, sunfish, catfish, sculpins, and a few of the less common minnows.

I've kept at least one member of about all of the tropical "hobby" species, but never really got into discus or freshwater stingrays (so MM has me beat there on both counts, as do you with the discus). Right now, one of my favorites of the tropicals is a pair of Mystus leucophasis (Asian upside down catfish) that were given to me several years ago. The female is starting to get that "Is my fish pregnant?" look about her, and I haven't found any documentation that these have been spawned in an aqarium, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'd also like to get a tank together for a school of Denison barbs (aka rose-line or red-line shark, Puntius denisonii), a species I haven't tried yet, but like the looks of very much: http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_Puntius_denisonii.php

Little did my mother know what she was starting when she took me to a store grand opening and got me four free goldfish when I was five years old!

I'm starting to wonder if Magic Man is the infamous Lee Bell from the old FISHNET days.
