I know it sounds like a dumb question but my husband is a mechanic and he keeps on slipping on oil spots. We want to find some shoes that won't slip very easily under those conditions. Any mechanics out there know a thing or two about this?

You'll want to look for oil-resistant soles, and steel toes.
Sear used to sell a sneaker style shoe with both and I wore them at the Fire Station for years. For a more substantial shoe, try a place that specializes in work boots. He's on his feet all day long, and probably on a concrete floor. Don't try to save a few bucks, spend the extra money and save his feet.

generally, a steel shank and a steel toe cap. it should say OSHA certified on the box and have a tag on the shoe laces too. you will also want skid/oil resistance. if you weld, you will want real leather to stop sparks. feet are one of the worst spots for a red hot spark. comfort is essential. something for being on your feet all day. you don't necessarily need expensive shoes to get quality and comfort. i have bought many a pair from walmart for $20. low top, like tennis shoes is an option with some brands too. there are even some steel toe low tops that look like regular tennis shoes, but still meet osha requirements.

Shoes aren't the problem--oil spots on the floor are...get some oil dry/kitty litter and cover any spills right away, pour a little sand on the floors for traction and if necessary, I use to pound small brads into my shoes every inch in a grid pattern to help gain some grip...make sure they're short enough to not go through the sole and clip the head off with a side cutting wire cutter....kinda like cleated shoes for sports. Good quality shoes like Redwing with oil resistant soles are the best to buy....once you wear the tread pattern off, they are more prone to slip.

Almost any decent work boots have slip resistant soles but there's only so much they can do. Oil is designed to reduce friction, whether in the engine or between foot and floor. The best way to deal with this is to clean up excess spills before they become a problem.
