Before the last World Cup '06 began, I believed that Brazil would not be in the final as the majority of the media predicted.
I told everyone that it was going to be Italy vs. France. It was an intense game for me to watch because I was cheering on both teams. For France because of Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, and other great players. For Italy also because of so many great players, Buffon, Zambrotta, Cannavaro, and most of the team. What's strange though is that I never liked Marco Materazzi. I was so disturbed that Zidane was sent off the field and didn't complete the game that I felt physically sick. I couldn't even enjoy Italy celebrating after the game.
No matter who would have won or loss the game, in a way both teams would have been winners. Both teams worked so hard to make it to the finals, that in the end the team, the fans, and their countries should be proud of them.
It was so hard to watch towards the end of the game, because Thierry Henry left the game due to exhaustion, and then of course the infamous headbut incident between Zidane and Materazzi. I was just numb at how the game ended.
I am not blaming Zidane for France's loss, because Henry left the game also. It would have been so wonderful to see Zinedine hold the World Cup trophy once again or even to receive a medal for being a runner up. I knew when the headbutt happened there had to be a significant reason for it. Unfortunately, Marco Materazzi had to use verbal tactics instead of skill like the rest of the Italian players to go after Zidane.
Almost a year later, I have finally watched the game again. This time I could finally relax, enjoy the game, and really watch the game.
I still firmly believe that Materazzi not only deserved the headbut but that he is a 'butthead.' lol He is a dirty player and has done physical things to other players. Unfortunately, during the World Cup the media didn't focus on that.
I still do not blame Zidane for what he did. In fact, if any of the French players had made remarks to any of the Italian players like Materazzi had, they would not have only headbutted the player they would have beat the crap out of them for insulting a family member. I'm part Italian and I know Italian men always defend their mothers, sisters, and wives.
I go into detail about the incident because a year later and people on Yahoo! Answers continue to bring up the France vs Italy questions or the Zinedine vs Marco questions.
Let us not forget that also during the World Cup, one of my favorite players (and one of the World's best) Luis Figo (Portugal) also headbutted a player and no one made a big deal about it.
To me I think both teams have great players, just as all countries have great players. The World Cup is about excelling to be the best player and country you can be, and about the world coming together in a peaceful event.

I am happy France has a lot of fans.
France-Italy in Football is like France-England in Rugby: artists vs great competitors.

Of course France is better. The fool above is saying that French Team don't have French soccer players. Everyone is French in there. It's just that they are so good that other CLUBS buy them. Thats for the club only.
Yes Italy is playing durty. France is playing the most skilled and the most cleanest soccer in the world. Freakin Mattaratzi ruind the whole game man.

I too prefer France!!!
It was too bad that the last World Cup had to end the way it did. The Italian player should be banned for life for instigating the activities as he did.
He brought shame onto Italy, to Soccer and least of all himself.
I only wish more had come to Zidane's defense...perhaps a few more head butts to the Italian guy would have been justified!!!

My personal choice is France.
But yeah, Serie A is much higher on the rankings then Ligue 1. The Italian team is great, but I like France more for some reason.

Both teams are excellent and are better than England. I like them both. I did sort of want Italy to win the world cup more.
