I agree. It is out of hand. I'm from Canada and went to a catholic high school where we wore a uniform. There were 5 schools in my hometown and mine was the only one with a uniform. This made no impact on the level of violence. In fact, my school was one of the worst.
The main reason for dress codes nowadays (in light of the recent school shootings) is for safety. The idea is that kids can easily conceal a weapon while wearing baggy clothing or can wear gang colours. If you saw Bowling for Columbine you'll remember the scene where a normal-dressed (no baggy clothes), clean cut kid pulled a multitude of weapons out of this clothing. If they want to bring guns in, they will find a way. The only way to really prevent this is to have a metal detector on all entrances to the school. Secondly, if gang members can't wear their colours they are just going to create an alternative symbol to represent them, such as a hairstyle or even the type of shoelaces they wear.
Uniforms may a good alternative, but they also cost families a great deal (I paid upwards of 500 a year for uniform items) and, in my experience, they don't provide any more safety. Schools and parents need to better educate children on violence and bullying and foster a healthy and happy environment to prevent violence.

Are you frigging kidding? Grade 2, and you already have to deal with this crap? It's so totally getting out of hand, where's it going to end? Headbands? Please!
Ugh...this is insane, seriously. When my daughter was in gr. 2, the school sent home a letter asking parents to stop their children from watching TeenageMNT. I went ape-sh.it, and my daughter didn't even watch it.
Sorry, starting to rant. I managed to raise my daughter to 18, she's the editor of her high-school paper...and she wore headbands growing up. Her guy friends wore their pants low, and they're in all kinds of extra curricular activities.
AND every one of them are great people.
...there I go again...

Wow, this is what the world is coming to. Everything is gang related anymore. they should just do uniforms...
The headbands are now a female gang symbol (depending on the design/color) They weren't allowed in our school either.

I would be livid. I think that is stupid to make such strict dress codes. I can understand not wearing cuss words on their shirt or pants that would fit their momma better and girls skirts should have limitations but your school sounds way to strict.
