Hear, hear! Diesel fuel is filthy stuff & the emissions it generates are far more harmful than modern petrol engined vehicles, whose catalytic converters actually filter out some of the toxins from our city streets. Ironically, by keeping private cars out out the cities, local councils are actually making the pollution worse.
And I don't buy the 'modern Diesels are better' argument, either. If you stand behind a brand new TDi Audi, Ford, Mercedes or whatever, you can TASTE the crud it's emitting, never mind all those million-mile buses & taxis, some of which generate their own form of chemical warfare!
The only reason I can think of why they don't ban the stuff altogether is the usual excuse, MONEY. Think of the cost of replacing all those clunky old bus engines. Hey, never mind, public transport is environmentally friendly. Honestly!!

The government is doing plenty. In California low sulphur fuel is mandated. The 2008 emission standards are the highest in the country. Bio Diesel is being distributed and is becoming available in more and more locations. Many cities have converted their buses to LPG or CNG.
Most of this counties ground freight and passengers are moved using diesel fuel. I would say that they contribute more to overall pollution than any one yet the government will not make the truckers toe the line because there is no suitable alternative right now.

Because the diesel fuel makes lots of money in tax and until someone admits the fumes are a carcinogenic they will do nothing look what happened to the price of diesel once the manufacturers made diesel cars once it was much cheaper than petrol but they soon hiked the price up once the public realised
The crap from the diesel is not just on road vehicles trains ships tractors generators and many other internal combustion engines contribute to the danger add them all up and it comes to more than petrol vehicles

They have. Diesel emissions are being greatly reduced with the new standards. Particulates (the belching smoke) are being reduced. Low-sulfur fuel is now mandated. All in an effort to reduce diesel pollution. Manufacturers held off for a little while putting resources behind diesels in the US until the standards were in place so they would know what they had to meet. Now with high pressure direct injection engines and the new fuel plus particulate traps, etc. you will see a lot cleaner trucks and cars burning diesel.

Actually your 4x4 is polluting more than a new generation 38 tonne truck. New technology in urea exhaust cannisters and particulate traps virtually wipe the exhaust clean of pretty much everything except of course CO2.
If you don't want to be guilty, buy a hybrid car, shut down your central heating/air conditioning permanantly, throw away all electrical items and grow trees, lots of them.

Although a bus may emit more carbon deposits than your 4x4, the bus can carry many more passengers, so for each passenger, a lot less stuff is belched out.
If you really cared for the environment, you would therefore use a bus - not your 4x4.

They're working on it.
New Diesel fuels are being marketed with less sulfur in them.
They are not perfected yet. In normal temperature ranges, the new fuels work great. In the colder winter temperatures, the new fuels turn to gelatin and clog up fuel filters rendering the vehicle inoperable.
But, they're working on it.

If they were to make a rule that went into effect immediately, thousands or even millions would be out of work. These changes have to happen gradually, and it doesn't help that the current US administration is a bunch of fuc king idiots who don't think humans cause global warming.
