Hello, one of the best places where you should be able to get good advice about books for people in your age group is your local library. Someone there will tell you what books are popular and may also be interested in hearing your ideas on books that you think they should carry in stock. If they haven't got a specific book that you want to read they may be able to get a copy from another library.
I don't know a lot about popular books for teenage girls but I googled and came across a site that may interest you. It's called teenreads.com and is full of information about books. There are still a couple of days for you to enter the contest on that site to have a chance to win a "Teenreads.com Beach Bag of Books."

I was going to suggest Lurlene McDaniel before I read the rest of your question! Anyway if you have only read that one of hers you should try more. I have read almost all of them and cant get enough. My favorite of hers is the Angels series: "Angels Watching Over Me", "Lifted up by Angels" and "Until Angels Close My Eyes". They are about a teenage girl who ends up falling for a teenage Amish boy. She learns about his culture while at the same time they have to deal with hardships like disease and death (as in all of McDaniel's books). If you havent already read these ones I highly suggest them.

A couple good books which deal with human conditions/illnesses are "Sweetblood" by Pete Hautman which is about a girl with diabetes who has a theory that the diabetic condition causes vampirisim (also has a subplot about the dangers of meeting people you meet on the Internet) and a book called "Senses Working Overtime" by Naomi Nash which is about a girl with a condition called synesthesia which causes a person to process stimuli, like hearing and smelling, in an odd manner. It takes place during a blackout in New York and she is trying to find a way home.
I thought both of these books were very good. I've provided the amazon links if you're interested.

I'm 24, but I highly recommend the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books. I just read the 4th one in March. They're funny, but also touch on very real issues that we women go through. Enjoy! They're by Ann Brashares.
