I've never had a yard sale and am thinking about having one with a relative. It seems most yard sales are just a bunch of junk. What sells and what doesn't sell?

childrens clothes are big sellers, but anything you want to sell will go for the right price. Expect to sell things for next to nothing, this is not the place to try to sell your old desk for $100 because people only want to pay $5 for something worth $100..I used colored dots to make pricing easy, for example a yellow dot for 10 cent items, a blue dot for 25 cents, etc. Or use the colored dots with prices on it and your stuff has one colored dot and your relative has a different color on her items. To make a rack to hang clothes on, if you have two ladders, you can put a pole through the top rung and hang clothes on it. Make sure you have helpers so someone can always watch the money and someone can watch the shoppers so they don't steal stuff. See if any of your neighbors want to have a sale on the same day so buyers can walk from house to house in neighborhood and you can share the cost of any signs you put up. Also, be ready to open on time, or earlier, as people will be waiting for you to open.

There are a few good things you can do.....advertise!
go to www.Craigslist.com. Find your state & city, find yarde sale / garage sales and list your address, times & dates of the sale. Even list the things your selling. It allows you to post pictures or links to other sites with your sale items!! I swear by craigslist..... PLUS, My buyer outcome is much better when I put my y-sales on there. I've actually done virtual yardsales completely through craisglist! Of course put signs at least 1.5 miles away from your home on a highly visible route. Make sure to research what you should sell your items at. Theres nothing worse than a super expensive yard sale!!

Believe it or not, people love junk. The success of a yard sale is not overpricing your items. People also love household items, so get your old appliances, pictures that you don't want anymore. As for pricing, here are some examples: Sell jeans for $3.00 a pair; sell shoes for $1.00 a pair; sell shirts for $1.00; sell sweatshirts for $2.00; sell dresses for $3 to $5 dollars. Remember this is a yard sale, which means bargains.

I've always found the childrens stuff goes real well. Make sure everything is cleaned real well. Shiney junk is more appealing (ha ha).

The way you present your sale is key. If you have a long driveway and put everything way back in the garage, you're less likely to get people to stop. Put out balloons and a big sign. Call it an estate sale - sounds more impressive. If you have a kid, have them sell lemonade at the same time (what adult can resist that?).

A yard sale by definition is a sale in which some one removes all the junk from their home and sits it in their yard...the key to selling is to be flexable with your prices and allow your customers to haggle with you... the biggest no no is sitting down while your customers shop. Speak up and let them know that if they buy that pair of pants you'll throw in a blouse for half off...

I don't usually shop for clothes at yard/garage sales but I refuse to go through piles of unmarked items. Put the size on them and if possible, hang them up. This will also stop some of the messy piles you will have in less than a half hour. This sale is about bargains, price accordingly. Greet everyone who stops. Just because they didn't buy, say thanks for stopping.
