I think many of you misunderstood the question, or maybe i am, but are you talking about how many of the parts are made by similar companies? For example, mitsubishi makes the majority of the turbo systems on even american cars. Yes the piping/intercooling/design is done by dodge, ford, etc. But they still use a mitsubishi compressor. Many engines are not built by ford, gm, lexus, etc. Ford, for example, uses alot of Yamaha built engines. Almost everyone uses tremec transmissions, eaton superchargers are used by many too. Also you may have noticed similar parts between allied brands or brands owned by the same company. For example, lexus and toyota are the same company, in japan there is no such thing as lexus, there is the toyota ls430 instead of lexus ls430. Honda owns acura. ford owns land rover, mazda, (aston martin was just sold off), jaguar, volvo, etc. Gm owns cadillac, saab, pontiac, chevrolet, etc. So many parts are used between brands. Sometimes it even goes as far as having the same engine. The pontiac gto (which just ended production) used the same LS2 6.0l v8 that the c6 corvette uses. Those are just a few examples.

What are you talking about? Yes cars are made up of the same parts (engine, transmission, brake rotor, alternator, etc.) However if you look at a Lexus engine it bears no similarity to a Mercedes engine and like wise with all of the major components of the cars. All manufacturers use sub contractor suppliers to supply them with tires, alternators, batteries and even AC compressors. However to make a blanket statement like you have shows how little you really know about automobiles and the components that make them.

NO: they make their own parts, but they do not want you using Chevy parts on your Ford, Lexus, or Mercedes. Other wise there would be no reason for so many different makes of cars.

The parts may seem similar, but they're not the same. For example, all cars have brakes. They are all somewhat similar, because they're brakes, but there are subtle differences in dimensions, in materials, etc. How many different ways can you design a brake system? Think about it.

Since its a skyline, you're hearing his BOV (blow off valve) or the winding of his turbo. When turbo's wind up the make a whistling noise and the BOV's make a hiss when there is too much PSI and it releases it.
