If you are running windows 9x or ME The disk defragmenter program will start over every time the disk is written to so it is essential to make sure that everything is closed before defragging. Also there is an option to check for errors while defragging. Disable this feature. Each time an error is detected on the drive defrag will start over again. If after disabling error checking the defragmenter finishes I would suggest running scandisk to check the drive for errors and attempt to fix them. Also It is harder on a hard drive to NOT defrag as a fragmented drive has to work harder to search for pieces of a file So it is UNtrue when the previous posters mention that defragging will ruin your hard drive. I am a heavy user and I clean and defrag my machine amost every other day to keep it running like new.
I hope this helps Good Luck

defrag is not a great thing to do often
it will eventually break you Hard drive down
you should defrag maybe one every 4 to 6 months
at that time your hard drive will be working like crazy to defrag files and you will eventually kill your HDD
If you cant do a defrag anymore maybe try a scan disk to see if you have any bad cluster
if you have a nbios that lets you you may also do a hdd test there
Hope this helps you

Dont do it everyday. I do mine like once a month, or once a week. When ever my computer starts to act different. I also do disk cleanup to get rid of things I dont need on my pc then do a de frag. I also have my ad-aware, and anti-virus that I do.
Have you tried cleaning the inside of your computer?
Ive also heard that once your computer dont need that to be done, then it will do that, just go to 3 percent and stop.
Good Luck!

it may that one of the sectors on the hard drive may have got corrupted try going to my computer and right clicking on the drive your using and select properties than go to tools and click error checking this should fix errors if you have and also make sure you try other defragmenters like this Free one called "Auslogics Disk Defrag " found here http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/index.php Good luck.

well, first things first, there is no reason you need to defrag your harddrive every week. My guess is that its acting up and you believe that defraging it will cure the problem. I am a graphic artist in the film industry and I defrag maybe once every six months...
