There are trams and buses in most of the town, the outlying parts may only have buses.
There are several metro (underground) trains, they go above ground outside the center of town, and connect the outskirts to the center, but are also useful for some center city stops.
There are also trains going from the center of the city and for the stops in town you can use the same tickets as for the buses and trams, ask which tickets are valid before getting on the train.
One of the train stops, outside the local fare zone, is Schiphol, the airport.

There are several kinds of tickets, one way tickets (maybe also returns?) daily passes, and the 'strippenkaart'.
I do not live in Amsterdam, I just visit it, and I never learned the local tickets. I know that buying a 'strippenkaart' will allow you up to 7 travels on the Amsterdam public transport, any of them up to an hour, with as many changes as you can get into that hour.

As far as I know there is still a tram going a circular route, stopping near many museums, shops and bars.

On top of this, there are also several canal boats that have several stops, these all have their own tickets and you have to use the company you got your ticket from.

Plenty, always late - and almost everywhere.

Amsterdam has Busses, Trams, subways, Trains and several more touristy type of transport such as a horse & carriage, biketaxi etc.

To be able to use Public Transport you need either cash or a 'strippenkaart' which you can get from many places.

After roughly 11pm, the frequency goes down, and after 1 am it`s very quiet with public transport.
