We like a good mix of history historical sites but not too many museums or churches. A couple key ones are good. Also, does anyone have suggestions on great local restaurants/hidden gems that aren't touristie? I love places with smaller plates where I can try a greater variety. Thanks!

Hi Lisbon is a beautiful city and its great to just wonder around and soak up the atmosphere. The best way to find good restaurants is to watch where the locals go most Portuguese people eat out at lunch time so it easy to see where's popular. Some nice things you can get in small portions include all sorts of seafood, presunto (like parma ham) and chourico sausages. For main meals try bacalhau com natas a gorgeously indulgent cod and cream casserole.
Here are some cool things to do in Lisbon:
sauder up through the little winding streets of cafes and artists studios to the castle Castelo de Sao Jorge for a great view over the city then find lunch in a back alley restaurant
take the train from Cais do Sodre to Belem to visit the monastry, eat a pastel de nata custard tart, cross the road and climb the monument to the discoveries for great river views and if you've still got time left you could take in some moder art at the gallery nearby
go to the Oceanarium an amazing, huge aquarium in Parque doe Nacoes (go on the underground)- by far the best I've ever seen- watch out for the sea otters they are so cute!
If you fancy heading out of town you could go to the coast around Cascais or to Sintra a historic and romantic woodland town
In the evenings head to the Bairo Alto for the coolest bars.

Have a great holiday!

Take day one and go down to the Government Square where the Electrics are all parked. (You have to be there before 9 am). Go up to one of the old timey electrics and get the day excursion with them. They take you all over the city and you can hop off and on as you see places you like.

I hopped off at lunch at Monasterio de Jeronimos, and within walking distance of that place (As in two blocks or less) were the Monastery, which is SIMPLY a must-see, the Maritime Museum, The EU Convention Center, the Monument to the Explorers, Pasteis de Belem, and the Torre de Belem. The electric can also take you to the Trolley Car museum, which is not the same as the Royal Carriage Museum.

That night, book reservations at a Fado house for dinner and a great show.

The next morning, wake up and go take in some beach.. hop up to Cascais and walk through the fish markets. If you can find O' Barbas for lunch.. it's totally worth it. After lunch putter over to Sintra. The palaces and gardens are gorgeous and the whole mountain is a unique ecosystem from the area around it.

Catch dinner at the hotel in the town or putter back to Lisbon and walk through the Baixo Chiado listening to the waiters hawking the menus at you till you find something you like.

Last day, go take in some Tagus...Troll down to the Expo 98 site (Vasco de Gama mall is close by here) and play around in the Oceanario. Tool around the mall and pick up lunch. Catch the Metro over the river to Almeda and visit the Christo-Rei.. the twin of this statue is in Lisboa's sister city of Rio de Janeiro. If you have time, catch the Metro back to the Lisboa side and either cruise up to check out the Castelo de Sao Jorge, or the Royal Carriage Museum.

Hit the sack that night, get up the next day and go home, and experience "Saudade" for Lisboa.
