Start out with a 20 gallon tank, it's easier to keep up with and clean
Here are some links about cycling a tank as well as breeding guppies

Personnally I would start out with 2 males and 4 females
Don't forget to add real plants in your tank as well (good hiding places for your fry, since the mom eats their fry)
The main thumb rule is 1inch fish on 1 gallon of water
Good luck
Hope that helped

To be completly safe, go with 1 guppy per gallon of water. You can actually push that guideline a LOT, as long as you have the tank well filtered and keep up the water changes. (I have 7 guppies and a 2" baby pleco in a 5gal tank, but dont tell the 1" rule Police) The tank will need some sort of filter, a small heater and a light if you want to grow plants. And only buy males unless you have space for LOTS of guppies. I have given away 50 guppies from my 18gal tank tank - this month. I wont say how many are left, but it's still overstocked ;-) Ian

I would get 3 males and 5 females. Guppies breed very quickly and give birth to quite a few, 15 or so. But nature takes it course and some die along the way, so you should end up with a reasonable amout in a short space of time. Good luck

Becareful not to put too many fish in the tank at once. The water needs to cycle, PH, nitrates, nitrites... Start with 5 or so and then add more in a week. Most pet stores will test your water for free to see where your levels are at. Plants will also help cycle the water. Have fun!

If you want all the males to look the same, start with just one pair, or trio (1M, 2F). If you just want fish, 3 or 4 males and 5 or 6 females. If you have plants and ornaments for hiding places you will have lots of guppies in a few months.
