ugh! i must have a leak somewhere. compressor works, fan works, etc. just blows room temp air.

Forever, it is a sealed system with lubricating oil circulating with the refrigerant, which is not freon but is usually some other CFC any more.

Freon will last forever. No need to change. If you have a leak, you will have to add more.
