You are on the correct tract. The best bet is to look up the history of the Hudson Bay Co. You might also look up emigrations from the Orkney's and also the History of emigration from Scotland.

Do you know Dr. John Rae? He's from Orkney.

It's been a couple of years since I read this book but it was really good:

Fatal Passage: The Untold Story of John Rae, the Arctic Adventurer Who Discovered the Fate of Franklin. Harper Flamingo Canada, 2000. 328 pp, $34 Cdn, ISBN 0 00 200054 7.

He worked for the HBC. Not sure if this one account will help you but I thought I'd mention it because it was a good book and he/his accomplishments were very impresive.
