The two Cultures are very different as far as ethics and social bounderies are concerned. Also, the culture of Taiwanese are completely "free" people. Their government is free, open and elected.

China is more homogeneously Han, more uniformly light skinned, tall slender-type people, extremely pretty, etc, whereas Taiwanese actually have Polynesian blood along with Chinese, Dutch and Portuguese and Japanese, giving many people western characteristics like larger breasts, wavier hair, different tooth shape, and slightly darker skin, at times.
Although many women are still fashionably slim in Taiwan it is getting to be the exception rather than the rule, as life is probably still cushier than in China, and more western processed foods available...

But, that's only the Hoklo Taiwanese, the majority, but there are also Hakka, and they are more like Mainland Chinese, though often inbred with the Aboriginal Taiwanese, another entirely different group up in the mountains, consisting of many tribes...
Last but not least are the "Waisen", a pure Han Chinese influx, coming over in the 1940's with Chiang Kai Shek, -not to be overlooked, as it increased the population at the time by about 25%. That's mostly in Taipei, though

The PRC lost a lot of their cultural value since 1949 especially since the cultural revolution. Taiwan which was under Japanese rule was not affected and maintained a lot of their Chinese Culture.

SO if you are interested in Chinese History, go to the PRC but if you want to experience Chinese Culture come to the R O C .

Some similarities:

Both are occupied by people of Chinese ancestry. They study Chinese history & classic literature, enjoy Chinese cuisine, celebrate Chinese holidays, write & speak Chinese. Chinese as a race is very hospitable, family oriented, and hardworking. Food is a big part of people's life.

Some differences:

Taiwan has a democratic government. The news is very transparent (sometimes too tabloid-ish). People are also crazy over celebrities... teenage idols & popstars. For working people, many are under immense pressure to excel. Many people worship idols as their religions. Some con artists utilized temples to bate money from people. Politics is also a mess there.

China is a communist country, so news & free press are restricted. It has gone through cultural revolution, so a lot of classic virtues were forgotten. However, due to its restriction on "unhealthy" media, young people don't get as much bad influence from celebrities. Religion freedom is also restricted. Some Christians & other religion (falongong) members have been persecuted.

almost the same. but there are a few differences. people in taiwan use traditional chinese, and write from right to left. people on mainland china use simplified chinese and write from left to right. people in taiwan speak their own dialect while also speak mandarin. people on mainland speak their own dialects and also speak mandarin. so people on either side of the taiwan strait can communicate with each other. and of course, is called the people's repulic of china, and the other is called the republic of china.
