It has a picture of a man and says Madero. It's from 1989. Says $500. Is this coin worth any thing and where would I go to get money for it?

You have KM# 529 a copper-nickel 500 Peso coin. There was a monetary reform in 1992 so the coin is no longer legal tender in Mexico. They minted over 230,000,000 of them so they are not scarce. Most world coin dealers have them in their world coin boxes for .05 to .25 each. it would cost more to go to a dealer than it is worth. !989 is not old by the way for coins of Mexico under Spain go back to the 1600's. Sorry to disappoint you.

You have a copper-nickel Mexico 500 pesos coin that uses the old pesos unit before the revaluation in 1993 that's now obsolete and not at par with the current Mexican money. In 1993, Mexico issued the "Nuevo pesos"(new pesos) in order to stem inflation, and the last two zeros were removed from the value. 500 old pesos was exchangeable to 5 new peso then.

Your $500 coin dated 1989 is valued at $0.50 in nice circulated with luster to $2 in mint condition, while lower grades sell for $0.25 and less. It's considered a common coin which dealers rarely buy so you would fare better disposing it to another world coins collector. It has a mintage of 230,000,000 and depicts Francisco Indalecio Madero on the reverse. He was a politician, writer and revolutionary who served as President of Mexico from 1911 to 1913.

Mhh.....500 pesos at that time was nothing. It was the time of a big devaluation if I well remember. Keep the coin anyway, the older it gets the more value it will have. 1989 is far away, but still not enough time to make it an antiquity. But in 10 years its sure will be.

The coin is worth more as time passes so it must be worth more than 500$ and you can go to a bank.

Try to sell it on ebay or a collector convention. It should have some value, and it depends on the condition of the coin.
