Gotta 2nd the Strat'. Fairly inexpensive & well known. A Squire wouldn't be a bad 2nd choice if the Strat' is too pricey.

Stratocaster or the underappreciated Fender Telecaster Deluxe. Originally produced from 1972-1981. The telecaster was re-issued in 2004. The '04 re-issue and the 2007 G.E. Smith edition both have the classic solid body, and warm melodius feel. While the 2007 Yngwie Malsteen edition has a crisper sound.

And of course, Everybody knows the sound and comfy feel of a Strat. You can't go wrong with that choice!

Strats are pretty nice, but look for a used one off of Ebay or something. I've heard lower-end Ibanez guitars are absolutely terrible, but I've never actually had one myself. Smae thing with Epiphones. If you've been playing on accroustic a while and you think you won't flake out, then I would buy up a little and get something better than a starter-guitar. I hope you have an amp!

Try a Yamaha Pacifica, looks like a Strat. but has a humbucker at the bridge. A great starter electric. Get a good practice amp, Vox do some good Valvetronix modeling amps from £99 for a 15 W. Good rockin'.

There are many good guitars out there Fender, Ovation, Martin, Gibson to name a few but if you have been playing for a year you should be able to distinguish from the feel (how the strings feel against the neck and your fingers, how hard it might be to press the strings down to the frets does it make your fingers sore) and of course the sound, this is something you have to determine your self.

Go with a buddy who really knows them and have him/her help you pick one out. For that much cash you should be able to get a fairly decent one. Look for one in good condition, but used - you will get more for your money that way.

BTW: my first electric guitar was a "National". My second was a Gibson. Now I have a lot of different guitars.

Go down to the shop and try out as many as you can to see how it fits your style. Every guitar is different and you may just find the ideal axe for you.

I love all brands of guitars but Paul Reed Smith makes killer ones but unfortunately they are not in your price range. Ibanez makes great 1st time cheaper priced guitars.
