Why do some people get really personal and mention somebody's family or mother or whatever else for that matter?

I have no clue, but if you happen to come across something resembling a half way decent answer, by all means let me know.
One day I asked a question about parents, and this girl outright called my mother everything but a child of God. It hurt me soooo bad. Not because I wasn't "tough enough" to take it, but because my mother had just passed away. I just deleted the question and stayed away for a few days.
Sometimes people really should think before they speak . . .

Because they lack the rationality and the decency to act like an adult and choose to use specious arguments and childish backbiting because they do not have anything to offer to the argument but their ignorant observations and insults instead of properly debating the issues. By showing their loud disrespect they show that that their waters do not run deep.

cowards. safe and anonymous behind their computer screen. who is that person? who cares.... no one taught them the meaning of respect. sometimes it is done jokingly, but sometimes it is just downright rude. the world is full of assholes. good thing that's not all the world is full of. oh well. i have just started hanging out in P&S for about a week or so, and it is so much nicer in here. lots of laughs. thx. it is alot of fun.

That is wrong...totally out-of-line. It's bad enough that people dis each other on this site--but keep the family members out of it. Strange how people are so brave when anonymous.

So long as they say it's ok then fine but personal stuff is just a no no and to be honest no-one cares about your best friends social problems! Thanks for raising an issue on respect though. I hate rude people!

Because it's summer break and some of the youth haven't developed social skills as well as the adolescent adults.

I totally agree with you! Just answer the question and if you don't know the answer don't be a smart a**! It really ticks me off.

well part of the reason is.... school's out.... the other part would just be the amount of miserable & under medicated people that infest this site & want to make everyone else as miserable as they are.....
