That is a very old G3 iBook.

You're stuck with Mac OS9.

There are various versions of the University of California UNIX (Berkeley Systems Distribution or BSD) that was used to begin the design of Mac OS X, such as NETBSD, FreeBSD and OpenBSD:

This is a link to a Mac-ish UNIX system, MachTen UNIX, costs $99:

And several Linux (almost UNIX) systems:

Yellow Dog Linux 5.0.2 on DVD costs $49.95 + shipping, no support or $99.95 + shipping for 6 months install support:

MKLinux, developed initially by Apple but spun off when they started the Darwin/OS X project:

Gentoo Linux for PowerPC 32 bit costs $9.95:

My favorite was BE OS that began as a Mac 64-bit system around 1996 and could run 4 different quicktime 3-D animation movies at the same time without dropping a single frame which was impossible for the Mac OS of that day. BE Inc. was started by Jean-Louis Gassée, former mover and shaker with Apple. BE teamed with Power Computing, the leading clone maker of Macintosh computers, in 1996 but Apple soon bought Power Computing with a little help from Bill Gates and that put an end to a competing OS on Mac platform. BE made a WinTel version and finally dropped the Mac version. They dissolved in 2001, selling assets to Palm, Inc. who did nothing with BE. You may find Mac versions of BE OS CD on eBay but I have not tried installing mine on a G3 or later computer. My copy is in storage in another country.

There is hope for the future of the BE concept:

Unfortunately mac makes its hardware and O/S propietary.

There may be some other third party O/S out there that will work - but you probably won't be doing much with it.
